Granite and Marble Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose my own slabs?
Yes. Call us and we can direct you to wholesalers with hundreds of different slabs of material.
How thick are the slabs?
Natural granite and marble stone slabs are available in both 2cm (3/4”) and 3cm (1 -1/4”) thicknesses. Most kitchens in middle Tennessee are done in 3cm material.
What’s the difference between marble and granite?
Although both are stones and both are quarried materials directly from the earth, granite and marble are quite different from each other.
Granite is formed deep in the earth’s mantle at extremely high temperatures, and is a very hard, resistant stone made of crystallized minerals.
Marble started out as sediment on the ocean floor. With pressure and time it becomes sedimentary rock. It is softer than most granites and can be etched by acids such as vinegar and citrus beverages.
What is the best way to clean marble?
Never use anything you wouldn’t use on your hands. DO NOT use powdered cleansers or abrasive pads to clean your marble.
Is it necessary to seal stone?
All stone is porous to some degree, and can absorb liquids and stain. Some stones are more porous than others, so it is important to discuss your stone choice with us. We can determine if your stone needs to be sealed with a penetrating sealer. We seal every natural stone we install. In some cases we recommend the use of a 15 year warrantied sealer for an additional cost.
What is honed granite?
Granite that is "honed" has a textured finish that is less reflective that polished granite. This gives a softer matte appearance to the stone.
Can I use marble on my kitchen counters?
Yes. Marble has been used for thousands of years. However, it is important to understand the characteristics of marble as you make your decision.
Marble will etch, when to acidic liquids come in to contact with it. This would include vinegar, wine, mustard, catsup, citrus and a host of other food-related products. These acidic substances will dissolve the calcium in the marble and changes the texture and appearance of the marbles surface. This is called etching.
Additionally, marble is softer than most granites and can be scratched more easily than harder stones.
Can I put hot pans and dishes on my granite countertops?
Yes, but remember that the granite will hold onto the heat for a long time. With softer types of stone like marble , it’s best to use a trivet or pot holder.
How durable is marble and granite?
Regular cleaning will keep your marble and granite looking beautiful for the life of your home.
How do I care and maintain my new stone?
Use coasters under glasses and place hot items on trivets or pot holders. Clean your new stone with a natural stone cleaner or PH balanced soap in warm water. Be sure to NOT use any acidic or abrasive household cleaning products as this may break down the stone surface.
Will my stone have visible seams?
Some countertop installations will require a seam. We will work to minimize the number of seams. Seams are visible, but we use a special tool to minimize the appearance of any seams.
